Junior forward Megan Lindsay scored two goals and senior forward Brandi Hamre and sophomore forward Kelli Zakrzewski scored one apiece to lead Seattle Pacific University to a 4-0 victory over Grand Canyon University in a 2011 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship West Region first-round game tonight at Jesse Owens Stadium in Los Angeles.
The Antelopes, runners-up in the Pacific West Conference and ranked No. 10 in the West Region in the Nov. 2 official NCAA poll, finished the season 9-6-3 overall, 8-2-2 in the Pacific West Conference.
The Falcons, champions of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and ranked No. 3 in the West Region in the NCAA vote, improved to 17-2-0, 13-1-0 in the GNAC.
This was the first postseason appearance in the 16-year history of GCU's women's soccer program.
Seattle Pacific got on the scoreboard first in the 28th minute when Hamre received a pass from Zakrzewski and took a one-time shot inside the box that went through the legs of GCU senior goalkeeper
Stephanie Phillips (Tempe, AZ, Corona Del Sol, Washington State University). It was Hamre's sixth goal of the season and Zakrzewski's fourth assist.
Despite being down 1-0, the 'Lopes had the advantage in the first half statistically, outshooting the Falcons 5-3 and having a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. All three shots taken by junior midfielder
Marina Nesic (Koceljeva, Serbia, Nada Dimic Zemun) were on goal, as was the one by freshman forward/midfielder
Gabriella Zavala de Rojas (San Diego, CA, San Diego High School of International Studies).
Phillips had one save and her counterpart, senior Brooke Yokers, who is undefeated as a starter since taking over for the last seven games, had four. Both teams had four corner kicks and 16 fouls were called, nine of them on GCU.
The score became 2-0 in the 61st minute when Lindsay took a shot inside the box off a corner kick. Senior midfielder Kelsey Jenkins, the 2011 GNAC Player of the Year, and Hamre got assists. It was Lindsay's team-leading 10th goal of the season and Jenkins' team-high 10th assist.
In the 72nd minute, Jenkins got her 11th assist and Zakrzewski tied Lindsay with her 10th goal of the season on a shot from inside the box.
Thee minutes later, Head Coach Stevie Gill replaced Phillips with sophomore
Cat Lena (Tucson, AZ, Salpointe Catholic).
Lindsay capped the scoring and moved back into the team lead with her 11th goal on a penalty kick in the 75th minute.
For the game, Seattle Pacific had a 13-12 advantage in shots, but GCU had an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Phillps recorded two saves, while Yokers, who posted her fifth shutout in the past eight games, had eight.
The Falcons had seven corner kicks to the 'Lopes' four.
An astounding 37 fouls were called, 21 of which were on GCU.
The Lopes earned the PacWest's automatic bid by virtue of being the first eligible team in the conference standings. California Baptist (14-2-1, 10-1-1) won the conference championship, but it is in its first season at the Division-II level after moving up from the NAIA and won't be eligible for postseason for two more years.
GCU and Seattle Pacific now have met seven times in their histories, and the Falcons have won all seven games by a combined score of 25-1.
Seattle Pacific will move on to face the regional host, Cal State L.A. (12-4-3, 10-3-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Conference), at 2 p.m. Arizona time on Saturday. The Golden Eagles finished second in the CCAA's South Division and are coming off a 1-0 loss to Chico State in the semifinals of the CCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
Seattle Pacific 4, GCU 0
