Kaitlin Cochran’s first trip to the Pan American Games was a successful one.
The Grand Canyon University graduate assistant softball coach, who starred collegiately at Arizona State, is part of Team USA Softball, which won its eighth Pan Am Games gold medal last month in Guadalajara, Mexico.
“Playing for Team USA is more than I ever thought it would be,” said Cochran prior to her trip. “It’s always been a dream and to live it is something in itself. I’m very thankful to have this opportunity.”
Team USA went 9-0 in the tournament, defeating Canada 11-1 in the Gold Medal Game.
Cochran has been a part of Team USA since 2010 and is considered one of the
veterans on a very young team. Still, the initial trip to play in the Pan Am Games was a thrill to the Yorba Linda, Calif. native.
I’m very excited about my first Pan Am Games,” said Cochran. “To go to Guadalupe (Mexico) and compete for the Pan Am Championships with other sports down there for Team USA will be a lot of fun.
“We know there’s a target on our back, so we always have to come with our ‘A’ game.”
It was more like an A-plus game. Along with going 9-0 in the tournament, Team USA outscored opponents 78-8.
Cochran was a standout at ASU and is in her second year as a graduate assistant coach at Grand Canyon under head coach Ann Pierson, who won gold medals for Team USA at the PanAm Games in 1991 and 1995.
