Grand Canyon baseball players, coaches visit new friend at Phoenix Children's Hospital

Grand Canyon University baseball players Joe Jacobson (Scottsdale, AZ, Coronado), Joey Bristyan (Scottsdale, AZ, Horizon) and PJ Garcia (Phoenix, AZ, Thunderbird) made a new friend Sunday.
You would have never known it. It seemed like the group had been friends for years.
The GCU players and coaching staff visited the Ronald McDonald House at the Phoenix Children's Hospital to pay a visit to Vince Serrao.
Serrao, from Kingman, Ariz., is receiving cancer treatments at the hospital. The players heard the high school senior-to-be, due to the treatments, would have to give up his final season of baseball and wanted to pay a visit.
The young men sat and discussed favorite sports teams, playing sports -- in particular baseball -- over playing video games, among other subjects.
"He's so positive and he loves baseball," said Garcia, who had fun joking with Vince after finding out his favorite basketball teams were Phoenix Suns' rivals, the Lakers and Spurs. "It was just a normal day with the guys."
GCU head coach Dave Stapleton presented Serrao with a GCU baseball jersey and gave him and workers at the hospital hats and t-shirts to pass out to others.
Each player and coach shared their biggest baseball adversities and how they were able to overcome them.
"(Visiting with Vince) opens your eyes on what a blessing life is," said Bristyan. "He is going through something harder than any of us have ever had to go through."
Serrao exchanged phone numbers with the players and had them autograph his new GCU baseball cap.
The GCU baseball program has been at the forefront in giving back to the Phoenix community. Annually, the team plays a softball game with the residence of ARCH (Arizona Recreation Center for the Handicapped) and this past spring the team visited the Arizona Veterans Home.
"They are always great experiences," said Jacobson.
