The expansion of GCU athletics has brought about the growth of the program’s supporting staff and facilities.
Geordie Hackett, GCU’s head athletic trainer and director of strength and conditioning, recently received his certification in Functional Movement Screening (FMS). His goal is to address the needs of the individual student-athlete in conjunction with the team approach.
Athletic trainers always have been able to clinically and functionally assess an injured student-athlete. However, FMS allows trainers and performance coaches to better identify functional movement patterns, assess an athlete’s limitations, and prescribe corrective exercise to improve balance, mobility and stability.
For years, athletes have continued to get stronger, faster and more powerful. But such high-level training has led to inefficiencies in their functional movements, often contributing to dysfunction and injury. Student-athletes can train on the best equipment in the world, but if weakness or poor quality of movement is not addressed, then the underlying problem will remain.
The goal at GCU is to use FMS in testing all student-athletes, developing individual programs for those in need of them. The prevention of compensations and injuries will create a more efficient student-athlete, leading to improved performance.
