GCU celebrates Event Center Groundbreaking
6/25/2010 4:28:25 PM | General, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball
Over 300 Grand Canyon University staff and guests celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Event Center Friday morning.
The 5,000-seat facility will be the new home for GCU's men's and women's basketball games and will accommodate mid-size sporting events, musical performances, speaking engagements and conferences.
The facility is the pinnacle of GCU's two-year $60 million campus expansion and is scheduled to open in the fall of 2011.
"This day is about Grand Canyon University and not about a basketball team or even an athletic program," said GCU men's basketball coach Russ Pennell. "It's a great day to understand the movement of this university into the forefront of this community.
"Today, what's exciting is to see a dream beginning to come true. Many of us will look back years from now and say we were here."
Phoenix city councilman Claude Mattox said, "Grand Canyon has been described as a diamond in the rough. It's time for the diamond to shine."
The center is designed by Kansas City-based 360 Architecture, a firm with vast credentials in sports arenas, with local representation by Tempe-based Architekton.
