PHOENIX -- For the first time in the program's seven-year history, Grand Canyon University has been selected for the NCAA Division II Softball Championships. The Antelopes found out during this morning's 2010 Selection Show on NCAA.com that they will travel to Rohnert Park, Calif., where they join host Sonoma State, Dixie State and Chico State in a regional beginning Friday at Seawolf Field.
Dixie State is a fellow member of the Pacific West Conference, while Sonoma State and Chico State both are members of the California Collegiate Athletic Conference.
GCU, ranked No. 13 in last week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, set a new program record for most wins in a season this year with 42. The previous record of 37 was set in 2009. The 'Lopes (42-11) are the No. 3 seed in the West region and will open the tournament against No. 6 seed Chico State (29-19), which is in the postseason for the first time since 2005, at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
No. 2 seed Sonoma State (42-16) won its first-ever California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament championship this year, thereby securing the CCAA's automatic NCAA berth. The Seawolves, who are competing in the tournament for the third time in the past four seasons, will face No. 7 seed Dixie State (37-12) at 4 p.m. on Friday.
West Regional at Rohnert Park, Calif. Bracket
The winner of the double-elimination tournament will take on the winner of the other West regional, hosted by top-seeded Hawai'i Pacific (41-6) in Kaneohe, Hawai'i, this weekend. HPU claimed the PacWest's automatic NCAA berth by winning the conference championship. Hawai'i Hilo (35-14), another PacWest team, also will compete in the regional in Kaneohe. Other teams in that regional are Central Washington (37-13), champion of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, and Cal State Monterey Bay (33-18) of the CCAA.
Super regionals will be held May 21-22 at sites to be determined, and the finals will be played May 27-31 at Heritage Park in St. Joseph, Mo., on the campus of Missouri Western State University.
