Grand Canyon University and Hawai'i Pacific University, the top two softball teams in the Pacific West Conference, went head to head today -- twice -- at Howard A. Okita Field in Kaneohe, Hawaii. The games went about as expected, with the Antelopes winning the first game, 2-0, and the Sea Warrions taking the second, 3-2.
GCU now is 14-2 overall, 4-2 in the PacWest, while HPU is 11-1, 3-1.
The first game was expected to be a low-scoring affair because senior Amy Searcy (Bixby, OK/Bixby) was on the mound for the 'Lopes and senior Sherise Musquiz took the hill for the Sea Warriors. Searcy was 6-1 on the season and Musquiz, a two-time All-PacWest First-Team selection, was 6-0 and had the lowest ERA (0.59) in the Conference.
GCU pushed a run across the plate in the first inning and again in the fifth, and Searcy held HPU to five hits. The hitting stars were senior right fielder Nicki Lorenzi (Phoenix, AZ/Horizon), who went 2-for-4 with a triple and scored one of the runs; senior designated hitter Tracy Lubken (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon), who was 2-for-4 with a double, drove in one of the runs and scored the other run; and junior left fielder Teddy Barry (Phoenix, AZ/Greenway), who went 2-for-4. The 'Lopes' second run was unearned.
Entering the game, Barry was leading the league in home runs (5), RBI (20), total bases (37) and runs scored (19).
It was HPU's second home conference loss since 2007. Both of the losses have come to GCU.
The second game also was not an offensive showcase. Both teams scored once in each of the first two innings, but neither team scored again until the bottom of the sixth.
Sophomore Ivy Campas (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside) put her spotless (7-0) record on the line for the 'Lopes. She pitched well, allowing six hits and three runs (all of them earned), walking three and striking out two, But the Sea Warriors' Ashley Valine, who was 3-0 prior to the game, was even better. The junior gave up eight hits but only two runs, one of which was earned, and walked just one.
Lorenzi had another two-hit game, going 2-for-3 with one run scored, sophomore center fielder Kara Holtorf (Peoria, AZ/Sunrise Mountain) was 2-for 4 with one RBI, and junior third baseman Montana Lucas (Glendale, AZ/Cactus) was 2-for-3 with a double.
GCU plays another doubleheader against Hawai'i Pacific tomorrow and has twin bills against BYU-Hawaii Friday and Saturday in Laie, Hawaii, on the north shore of Oahu.
