Mutai Wins GCU/SWC Invite, Team Finishes Fourth

Grand Canyon University junior favorite Kipkorir Mutai (Bomet, Kenya/Kabusare, Gillette College) finished first at the GCU/SWC Cross Country Invite in Tempe. The team placed fourth.

Mutai was selected as this weekend’s favorite to win and he did. Coach Kim Sims was “thrilled with his finish today.” He finished the 8K course in 25:08.52, nearly 50 seconds faster than Northern Arizona University’s Kam Holbrook who took second.

Paul Bailey (Los Alamitos, CA/Los Alamitos, West Los Angeles College) finished second for the ‘Lopes and 15^th overall, recording a time of 28:02.32. Appearing in his second race this season, Chris Lewis (Peoria, AZ/Raymond S. Kellis) finished in 28:43.56 putting him 24^th overall. Julio Zuniga (Mexico City, Mexico, Trevor G. Browne (PHX)) struggled but still managed to finish fourth for the team carding a final time of 29:17.72. The fifth and final score for the team came from freshman Daniel Cocca (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon), who finished in 29:23.24.

Mesa Community College took first in team scoring with a total score of 52. Pima Community College finished second with 63 and Diné College was third with 103. Grand Canyon finished one point behind Diné with 104.
