The Grand Canyon University women's soccer team lost 1-0 to Pacific West Conference archrival Dixie State College tonight at the GCU Soccer Field.
The Antelopes shut out the Red Storm 2-0 last Saturday in St. George, Utah. It was their first victory ever over the Red Storm after going 0-5-1 in the prior six meetings.
GCU, ranked No. 7 in the West Region in the official NCAA poll and No. 9 in the region in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America vote, fell to 9-4-1 overall, 7-3-1 in the Pacific West Conference. Dixie State improved to 8-7-0, 5-6-0.
Dixie State forward Robin Huddleston scored the game-winner in the 81st minute after taking a through pass from midfielder Julia Chipman from 30 yards out and toeing the ball into the back of the net.
Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Phillips (Tempe, AZ/Corona del Sol, Washington State University) recorded four saves for the ‘Lopes.
The Red Storm had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks in the game. GCU held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Twenty-three fouls were called, 17 of which were on the ‘Lopes.
Four yellow cards were issued, three of them on GCU.
According to PacWest statistics through games of Oct. 21, the ‘Lopes are second in the conference in points (73), goals (30), goals per game (2.50), goals allowed (12) and goals-against average (0.96); third in shots (188); fourth in assists per game (1.08); and fifth in assists (13). They’re also first in offsides (36) and yellow cards (16).
Individually, sophomore midfielder Marina Nesic (Koceljeva, Serbia/Nada Dimic Zemun), who suffered a torn meniscus and underwent surgery to repair it on Tuesday, still leads the league in points (23), goals (10) and game-winning goals (3, tied with two other players). She also is second in assists 3, tied with 14 others).
Junior forward Michelle Carels (Anaheim, CA/El Dorado, Santiago Canyon College) is fourth in goals (5, tied with four others) and ninth in points (10, tied with one other).
Phillips is second in the conference in goals-against average (0.92) and third in save percentage (.821), shutouts (3, tied with two others) and shutouts per game (0.27).
