Grand Canyon heads to Cali for crucial weekend series
If ever there is a time where Grand Canyon needed to make a statement, this weekend is that time.
The Antelopes head to Southern California for a pair of doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills and UC San Diego, respectively, in marquee West Region matchups that could go a long way in definining the Lopes' season.
"We just need to keep playing good ball," coach Ann Pierson said. "I like the way we're playing right now."
GCU (14-3) meets Dominguez Hills (5-5) at noon Friday. The Toros are 3-3 at home this year. This will be GCU's first road game after playing in two neutral site tournaments away from Stapleton-Pierson Stadium.
Dominguez Hills pitcher Regina Farfan is 4-2 with a 0.31 earned run average and 21 strkeouts in 45.1 innings pitched. Emiley McEwen is hitting .520 with four home runs and 12 RBI for the Toros. No other Dominguez Hills hitter is batting over .286.
Grand Canyon will see UC San Diego (7-3) for the second time this year after beating the Tritons, 4-2, at the Best of the West Invitational two weeks earlier. The Tritons are 3-1 at home.
Kristin Lesovsky is batting .645 with three doubles, a homer and seven RBI. Lesovsky has the team's only home run this year. Katrin Gabriel is hitting .353, and Amanda Eliades and Lauren Chastain each .333. Chastain has one triple.
Tritons pitcher Camille Gaito is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one start. She had six strikeouts and allowed three hits in the complete game win. Chastain is 1-1 with a 2.13 ERA, and Christine Zankich is 2-2 with a 2.37 ERA.
The Antelopes went 1-1 against UC San Diego last year.
Grand Canyon pitchers Sammi Tiefenthaler (pictured) Jessie Palma each have six wins this season with nearly identical numbers. Tiefenthaler has a 3.88 ERA, and Palma a 3.90. Tiefenthaler has allowed 27 earned runs in 48.2 innings, and Palma 26 earned runs in 46.2 innings. Tiefenthaler has 28 strikeouts, Palma 23.
Natasha Dypchey is 2-0 with a save in 18.1 innings.
Pitching is paramount this weekend.
"I think we'll be ready," GCU shortstop Kelli Bridges said. "As long as we keep up the defense, and keep the bats going ... I think we have a lot of potential this year."
