"This has been a long time coming," he said. "I'm going to enjoy the way you play."
It was the first time Grand Canyon University's head basketball coach has seen the Runnin' 'Lopes, and it was a beautiful sight to behold. The Antelopes outpaced their opponent, the Notre Dame de Namur University Argonauts, in the second half, pushing their lead to as much as 23 points. They won, 72-55, tonight in Belmont Calif.
GCU improved to 7-13 overall, 1-3 in the Pacific West Conference. Notre Dame de Namur fell to 2-13, 0-4.
Sophomore guard Nick Witherill (Phoenix, AZ/Highland) paced the 'Lopes with 16 points on 6 of 9 from the field (4 of 5 from behind the arc) and had four assists. Junior forward Rony Tchatchoua (Little Rock, AR/Christian) had 12 points on 5 of 6 shooting and had three steals and a blocked shot, and sophomore forward Justin Wesolowski (pictured, Mesa, AZ/Mountain View) had 11 points on 4 of 7 shooting and pulled down a team-high eight boards. One of his baskets, a slam dunk in the second half, was worthy of appearing on ESPN's "SportsCenter."
GCU had just 12 turnovers, four in the second half, along with 18 assists. It shot 65.5 percent in the second half, including 66.7 percent from three-point range.
The first half was anything but fast-paced. At one point, Pennell substituted four players to inject some energy. Wesolowski scored the game's first points on a dunk at 15:56. When a media timeout was called at 9:55, the score was tied at 9. The halftime score was 27-18, 'Lopes.
The pace and intensity picked up dramatically in the second half. GCU made a 15-2 run in the middle of the period to give itself a comfortable lead.
Freshman guard Brad Carroll (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol), back in the starting lineup after serving a one-game suspension for a violation of team rules, made 4 of 6 shots from the field, and had five rebounds and five assists in the game. Senior forward Marco Ramos (Salinas, CA/North) also had a good night with five rebounds and five assists.
The 'Lopes and Argonauts square off against next Saturday in Phoenix. GCU's next game is on Monday against Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
