Freshman guard Steven Morin (Scottsdale, AZ/Saguaro) scored 33 points to lead the Grand Canyon University men's basketball team to a 101-79 win over Southwestern College tonight at Antelope Gymnasium.
Sophomore forward Justin Wesolowski (pictured, Mesa, AZ/University of Northern Colorado) had 15 points, senior forward Marco Ramos (Salinas, CA/Weber State University) had 13 points and freshman guard Brad Carroll (Chandler, AZ/University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) tossed in 11 points for the 'Lopes (0-3).
It was the first home game for GCU under new head coach Russ Pennell, and even though it doesn't count on the team's record it did make a positive impression on its fans, 502 of whom attended the game.
The 'Lopes shot 62 percent in the first half, which ended with GCU holding a 57-35 lead, and 55 percent in the second period.
The 'Lopes outrebounded the Eagles, 38-26.
GCU's next regular-season game is on Nov. 17 at California State University-Dominguez Hills.
