Women's Soccer Loses to Western Washington ![]()
The Grand Canyon University (GCU) women's soccer team had 31 fewer shots, 21 fewer shots on goal and 10 fewer corner kicks than it had on Saturday, and given those statistics the result was predictable -- especially against a much tougher opponent. The Antelopes, who routed winless Chaminade 7-0 on Saturday, lost 2-0 to Western Washington University (WWU) in a non-conference game today at the GCU Soccer Field.
Midfielder Kelly Irving and forward Claire Morgan scored unassisted goals at 50:03 and 76:30, respectively, to help the Vikings snap a two-game losing streak.
GCU dropped to 5-6-2 overall. WWU, which is 4-1-1 in the very competitive Great Northwest Athletic Conference and upset defending national champion and No. 1-ranked Seattle Pacific on Oct. 3, improved to 7-4-2 overall.
The 'Lopes actually outshot the Vikings, 13-10, but goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent made four saves in recording her fifth shutout of the season.
Senior midfielder/forward Kaylen Jackson (pictured, Tucson, AZ/Amphitheater) led GCU with four shots, followed by senior midfielder/forward Viviana Zumpano (Tucson, AZ/Flowing Wells), junior forward Kayla Poe (Mesa, AZ/Dobson) and junior midfielder Kelcee Newell (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) with two apiece.
GCU's next game is against Chaminade on Oct. 22 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
