GCU splits pair with WNMU
Grand Canyon's softball team dropped the first game of a doubleheader at Western New Mexico, but won thesecond Tuesday to remain a game over .500. GCU lost 4-3 in nine innings and won 12-6.
Trailing by three runs in the first game, Grand Canyon (19-18-1) tied the game in the top of the sixth inning when Jamie Stacy hit a three-run homer. It was her first home run of the season.
But WNMU (18-23) loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and pushed the winning run across with one out.
Left fielder Strohm Fouty had three of Grand Canyon's six hits and stoled a base in the opener. Stacy was 1 for 4, and Yasmeen Watkins and Christine Medrano also had one hit for the Antelopes.
Grand Canyon bounced back in a big way in Game 2, scoring 12 runs on 12 hits with 12 RBI. Randi Johns (pictured) hit two home runs, and Watkins belted another to tie each other for the team lead with seven apiece. GCU's Michelle Farrell, Tana Holtorf and Medrano also hit their first home runs of the season.
Johns hit a home run in her first at-bat and her final plate appearance. She and Holtorf hit back-to-back long balls, and Medrano added another in the sixth.
Tied 6-6 after four innings, GCU scored a run in the fifth and five more in the sixth to break it open.
Watkins was 2 for 3 with four RBI. Holtorf went 2 for 3 with three RBI, Johns 2 for 3 with two RBI, Farrell 2 for 4 with two RBI and Fouty 2 for 5 with a stolen base. Fouty has a team-high 21 stolen bases to move within one of Sydney Reyes' single-season school record.
Farell went the distance in Game 2 to pick up her 11th win of the season.
The same two teams will meet again Wednesday for another doubleheader beginning at noon.
