Grand Canyon University opens its second swim season in Riverside, Calif. at the PCSC Invitational Friday and Saturday.
It's the program's second season and first under head coach Steve Schaffer. This year's team includes a number of young swimmers. Sixteen of 25 men's and women's team members are freshmen.
"It'll be good to see what kind of team we can be and what we need to improve," said Gilbert, AZ freshman Caitilin Hoffman (pictured). "We're all pretty new and a lot of us are new to the sport. We want to see what we can do with a new coach and new teammates."
NAIA champion Cal Baptist will host this weekend's events. Friday's meet will consist of 12 relay races. Saturday's meet has a pentathlon format.
Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Seattle, Fresno Pacific, Cal State Bakersfield, Biola and Chapman are among the other programs competing at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
"I just want to see everybody race," said Schaffer. "I'm new to them and they're new to me.
"This meet is just laying a baseline for the rest of the season."
