PHOENIX —
Brian Smith sent shot a jolt into Grand Canyon University's (3-3) arm with his game tying solo shot in the bottom of the 8 th but it wasn't enough as Sonoma State pushed a run across in the 9 th to steal the 10-9 victory over the Lopes at Brazell Stadium on Saturday night.
Sonoma jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning paced by B.J. Collom's 3 run double. Collom tried to stretch his two bagger into a triple but was cut down by
Craig Daniel's rifle to
Brad Western at third.
GCU answered with 3 runs in their half of the second behind two passed balls and a hit by Daniel. GCU took the lead in the third when
Matt Henne was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded to send the go ahead run across.
Sonoma tied the game in the 5 th and reclaimed the lead on a Oscar Mendoza fielder's choice that scored Brain Colip. The Seawolves put two more runs across in the 7 th which GCU matched in their half of the inning. Smith clubbed his first home run of the season to tie the game at 9 apiece.
In the top of the 9 th inning Mendoza drove in Trevor Howell as Sonoma took the 10-9 lead. Alberto Rolon went 4.0 innings in relief to pick up his first win of the season.
Josiah Ziegler earned the loss his second of the season.
These two teams conclude their series tomorrow afternoon at Brazell Stadium. First pitch is set for Noon.
