Women's Tennis Coach (1980-81 & 1985-89)
Marlene Bjornsrud did something that few collegiate coaches have been able to accomplish, to win a National Championship in their first season as a head coach. The 1981 women's tennis team finished with a 20-8 record in route to their National Championship. Bjornsrud was NAIA National Co-Coach of the Year. After winning that title, Marlene followed another call, serving with A Christian ministries program outside of tennis in southern California. She returned to Grand Canyon in the fall of 1984 and led the 'Lopes to five consecutive NAIA District VII titles and a second place finish at the NAIA National Championships in her final season, 1989. In her seven seasons as a head coach at Grand Canyon, her teams went 139-63. Bjornsrud was District VII Coach of the Year six times and in 1988 was honored as the Wilson/NAIA Coach of the Year. In 1989 she won the ITCA Community Service Award.
