Gil Stafford took the reigns of the GCU baseball program and followed in the same direction as previous coach, Dr. Dave Brazell. GCU went 56-20, winning their 2nd consecutive NAIA baseball title. The 'Lopes won six straight in the NAIA College World Series, defeating Winthrop College (SC) in the final, 11-4. Canyon never scored fewer than eight runs in any tournament game and hit a then-record .365 for the tournament. Catcher Peter Bethea was the tournament MVP, hitting .538 with a tournament best 13 RBI.
