In October of 2014, Grand Canyon University announced an agreement with the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Board to redesign and manage the Maryvale Golf Course, just west of the main campus, for 30 years. A $9 million renovation project transformed the course into a premier golf destination while keeping the course available to the public at affordable rates. The rebranded GCU Golf Course opened in January of 2016 and experienced immediate success.
The golf course is home to the Lopes men's and women's golf programs. The teams are afforded access to the course and private practice areas reserved exclusively for team use, including a private driving range tee, two private chipping greens, and bunker and chipping areas. The coaches' offices and a private team area are located on the second floor of the new clubhouse.
Following the extensive renovation, the course features new tee boxes, challenging greens, extended fairways, enhanced bunkers, updated practice facilities and a 10,000-square-foot clubhouse including a restaurant and bar, second-story practice facility and fully equipped pro shop. Its stunning redesign shapes the GCU Golf Course as a traditional walking golf course accented with beautiful greens, preserved full-grown trees planted in the early 1960s, and distinct, memorable holes. The course also features two large hitting surfaces with putting and chipping greens.
In October of 2024, "The Cage" — reserved exclusively for the men's and women's golf athletes — was expanded to include three chipping greens, four practice putting greens, wedge targets, two bunkers, three sand targets, and a 130-yard full shot capability.
