Johnny Hill completed his second year as special assistant to the head coach in 2019-20 after serving as a graduate assistant during the Lopes' 2017-18 season.
Hill aids the coaching staff in game and practice preparation, along with the formulation of game plans and scouting reports. He is also responsible for preparing student-athletes for personal, academic and athletic success.
Prior to arriving at GCU, Hill spent one season as an assistant coach at Northwestern Ohio in Lima, Ohio. While there, he helped the team improve from 12 wins in the prior season to 18 in 2016-17. Hill also played a pivotal role in developing guards Lawrence Jackson, Sadeeq Bello and Nate Bradley toward postseason individual accolades.
In his collegiate career, Hill played and learned from a multitude of coaches while playing at Purdue, Texas-Arlington and Illinois State.
At Purdue in 2015-16, Hill appeared in all 35 games with 11 starts, averaging 5.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. He shot 53.7% from the field and a team-best 83.1% from the free throw line, while also leading the Boilermakers in steals with 35.
In 2014-15 at Texas-Arlington, Hill appeared in 21 games with 15 starts as a junior, averaging 10.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists for the Mavericks. While at Illinois State in his sophomore campaign, Hill was named to the Missouri Valley Conference's Most Improved Team after averaging 7.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists.
Hill, a native of Chicago, earned a master’s degree from Purdue in Leadership and Technology Innovation in 15 months and his bachelor’s degree from Texas-Arlington in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in Communications.
