AZUSA, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's and women's track & field teams completed competition at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday. Hosted by Azusa Pacific, the Lopes continued their conference leading performances after recording three program records on Thursday.
Just one day after
three Grand Canyon track & field records were broken, the Lopes continued their dominant performances against some of the top competition in the nation.
Scott Marshall and
Ryan Girk led the way for the men's team to extend their leads in the conference. On the women's side,
Martina Cernochova and
Sasha-Gaye Marston recorded high performances in their perspective events.
During the 100m, Cernochova placed sixth with a time of 11.77 seconds to extend her third best time in the Western Athletic Conference.
Tope Williams followed with her fastest 100m time since 2015 with 11.87 seconds. Her time will rank fifth in the WAC. Also participating in the 4x100m relays, Cernochova and Williams were joined by
Briana Myers and
Jessy Eatmon to place fourth in the meet. Their time of 46.81 will rank in the top five in the conference.
At throws, Marston placed third and fifth in the discus and shot put, respectively. Already ranking first in both categories in the conference, her mark of 50.01m would be the third best mark in the WAC.
To cap off a successful distance performance by the Lopes,
Bailie Jones ran a season-best time of 2:14.35 in the 800m to rank fifth in the conference. On the men's side,
Brandon Gonzalez ran his best 800m time in 2017 with a time of 1:52.28 to place him second in the WAC.
During the high jump,
Mally Gage leaped 1.63m to tie for fourth in the WAC. At pole vault,
Trista Smith vaulted an outdoor season best mark of 3.72m. The mark will increase her previous best mark to continue to rank second in the conference. At long jump,
Kayla Wilson leaped 5.84m to finish ninth in the meet and rank second in the WAC.
In the pole vault, the top-ranked Marshall placed first in the pole vault after recording a 5.22m vault. Marshall extended his lead in the conference as he defeated runner up Nathan Hiett by .25 meters at the Bryan Clay Invite.
Already ranked first in the conference for the 100m and 200m, Girk continued his dominant outdoor season. In the 200m, Girk finished fourth with a time of 21.18 seconds and 11th in the 100m (10.60).
Dionee Marrero followed with a new PR in the 100m (10.77) and 200m (21.60). His 200m time will rank him in the fourth in the WAC. Joining Girk and Marrero in the 4x100m relay team,
Matt Kaldawi and
Dario Horvat helped the Lopes place second in the meet.
Fresh off his first meet of the outdoor season,
Isaac Allanarem ran 48.24 seconds in the 400m dash. His time will rank second in the conference. During the 110m hurdles,
Anthony Phelps (14.71) and
William Winfield IV (14.74) placed eighth and ninth in the meet, respectively. Already ranking first in the WAC at the 400m hurdles, Phelps ran a personal-best 51.71 seconds to place second in the Bryan Clay Invite.
Next up, the Lopes will travel to La Jolla, Calif. for the Triton Invitational from Friday, April 21 – Saturday, April 22.
