AZUSA, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's and women's track & field team completed the Mt. SAC Relays/California Invitational Combined Events and Day 1 of the Bryan Clay Invite on Thursday. Competing against the nation's top student-athletes,
Grant Carpenter finished 15th in the Decathlon while the distance squad broke three program records during the Bryan Clay Invite.
A trio of long distance runners broke Grand Canyon outdoor records within an hour on Thursday. Leading the Lopes off,
Anna Henry, a junior from Spokane, Wash., crushed her own program record in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:57.89. Her time will rank her third in the Western Athletic Conference.
At the Mt. SAC Relays,
Mariah Montoya continued the record-breaking performances as she broke her own school record in the 10000m with a time of 37:04.78. Her time will rank her first in the conference by nearly 30 seconds. Shortly after Montoya's feat,
Sam Proctor did the same during the men's 10000m run. Proctor broke a four-year old school record by nearly 21 seconds with a time of 29:56.75. The time will rank him first in the WAC by over 40 seconds.
Competing in the "A" group during the California Invitational Combined Events, Carpenter completed a successful Day 2 to place in the top 15 of the event. Participating in the first decathlon event for the Lopes in the season, his total points of 6,448 will rank second in the WAC. Carpenter will only trail teammate,
Timmy Johnson, who placed sixth in the "B" group with 6,458 points. Joining Johnson in the "B" group,
Dominic Salaz (5,783) and
Adam Turner (5,774) finished 11th and 12, respectively.
The Lopes will continue the Bryan Clay Invite on Friday with sprints and field events to conclude the week full of competition.
