Carlos Gomez enters his fourth year as part of the coaching staff for the GCU women’s soccer team and was part of the 2011 squad that made their first ever NCAA playoff berth in the history of the 16-year program. He was also part of the GCU men’s soccer coaching staff from 2004-2009, during which time he helped guide GCU to back-to-back Pacific West Conference championships in 2006 and 2007, an additional PacWest title in 2009, and an NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance in 2007.
Gomez played for two seasons at GCU in 2000 and 2002. As a midfielder and defender, the Cartago, Colombia native had his best year in 2000, when GCU worked its way up to No. 4 in the national polls. Following a medical redshirt season, he completed his career in 2002.
After turning 16 years old, he played two seasons with the Cartago FC select team, a Third Division squad in Colombia. He also played for two seasons at Meridian Community College in Mississippi, earning First-Team NJCAA All-Region XXIII honors in 1999. Meridian finished fourth in the nation that year.
In 2005, he played for the Arizona Inferno, a member of the Premier Arena Soccer League, which served as a farm system for Major Indoor Soccer League. Gomez also played for the Arizona Sahuaros, who won a Men’s Premier League championship in 2003 and was the National Premier Soccer League runner-up in 2004. In 2005, he became an assistant coach/player for the team, making several appearances in the Lamar Hunt Open Cup from 2005-2010. His coaching experience also involves youth soccer with clubs, including CISCO (’05-‘08) and North Scottsdale (’09), high school as an assistant at Greenway High School (’09), and junior college as an assistant coach at South Mountain Community College (‘03). He holds a National “Y” and a National “D” coaching license. Gomez is responsible for player development and recruiting. Gomez received a Bachelor of Science in math for engineering and a master’s in business administration.
