Grand Canyon landed three players on the All-WAC team, with junior shortstop
Emilio Barreras, graduate outfielder
Eddy Pelc and redshirt junior reliever
Walter Quinn receiving second-team honors. Barreras also earned a spot on the WAC All-Defense Team for his elite performance at shortstop.
Emilio Barreras
All-WAC Second Team (shortstop), All-Defense
Barreras proved to be one of the most complete shortstops in the WAC, finishing the regular season ranked fifth in the conference in batting average (.367) and posting a .503 slugging percentage and .467 on-base percentage.
The native of Casa Grande, Arizona, tallied 54 hits, 11 doubles and 31 RBIs, all while working to return from a midseason injury that led to a month of missed time. His consistency in the field also landed him on the WAC All-Defense Team, where he anchored GCU's middle infield and recorded 95 assists and 39 putouts. Barreras continues to strike out at an extremely low rate with six strikeouts in 147 at bats, a rate of once ever 24.5 at bats that would rank in the nation's top five if he had enough at bats to qualify.
Eddy Pelc
All-WAC Second Team (outfielder)
Pelc capped his collegiate career with a powerful season at the plate, finishing with team-leading, career-high tallies of 17 home runs, 56 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.
The native of Huntington Beach, California, hit .296 overall and ranked third in the WAC in slugging percentage (.638) while starting all 55 games in center field. Pelc led the conference in walks (38). He ended the regular season on a tear, hitting .531 (26 for 49) with 10 walks over the last 13 games.
Walter Quinn
All-WAC Second Team (relief pitcher)
Quinn anchored the bullpen, recording 10 saves to rank second among the WAC's elite relievers and 16th in the nation.
In 23 appearances, he struck out 37 batters in 36 innings while holding opponents to a .224 batting average — the sixth-lowest among qualifying relievers in the conference. The Simi Valley, California, native's 3.75 ERA was also one of the best among WAC pitchers.
GCU will open play on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the WAC Tournament at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa. The Lopes await the winner of a Tuesday game between California Baptist and Utah Tech.
