NAMPA, Idaho – At the conclusion of the second day of the WAC Indoor Championships, both the men and the women lead the team scores.
Jennifer Johnson (Rolph) set a new school record in the pole vault with a 4.02 meter jump on her final attempt at the height.
Grant Carpenter followed
Ashley Krawczuk and won the heptathlon, the men's multi-event title. Johnson and
Tarasue Barnett captured crowns in the pole vault and women's weight throw, respectively.
At the conclusion of the day, the men lead by nine points and the women lead by 29. The Lopes have scored in every event they have had a competitor in.
As a whole, the Lopes took home three WAC gold medals and a handful of silver and bronze medals.
"Today, our women's team was led by Jennifer and her school record in the pole vault, along with the rest of our female vaulters, our long jumpers and weight throwers," head coach
Tom Flood said.
Johnson led the women pole vaulters to 23.50 points as the women went on to score 74.50 total points on the day.
Barnett won the weight throw for the second consecutive year. The Olympian in the discus didn't need her final throw to win a gold medal but threw her last throw regardless and put more than a 2.00-meter gap between her and the thrower that finished in second place.
In the long jump,
Kayla Finnegan (Wilson),
Shanice Lewis and
Sarah Root finished second, third and fourth.
"On the men's side, we started with a great finish in the heptathlon, going one, two, five, eight," Flood said. "We also had big days by our weight throwers and long jumpers."
Grant Carpenter broke his personal record in the heptathlon by over 300 points on his way to one of the top men's heptathlon scores in school history. Runner-up,
Adam Turner, broke his personal best by over 400 points.
Daniel Flores, raced well into the mile finals.
Paige Hildebrandt followed suit while advancing to finals.
In the 400-meter race,
Isaac Allanarem took almost a full second lead into finals with teammate
Anthony Phelps in the second seed. Freshman
Alex Thomas takes the seventh seed into finals.
On the women's side of the 400, freshman
Alexa Hokanson and sophomore
Symone Wright-Flowers made their way into finals.
Four men find themselves in the 60-meter hurdles.
Tevin Mayfield holds the top spot with
William Winfield IV in second. Teammates
Anthony Phelps and
Anthony Stennis will also get in the blocks in the final.
Briana Myers holds the top spot in the women's 60 hurdles, Root is in second with teammate
Shanice Lewis in fifth headed to finals.
Ryan Girk holds the top time in both the 60 and the 200 as he looks to claim two crowns tomorrow. He will be joined by two teammates in each race, for a total of three GCU singlets in both finals.
Tope Williams is in both the 60 and 200 finals tomorrow. The senior will join freshman
Naudia Dawson in the 60 and freshman
Dora Filipovic in the 200.
Paeden Jackson took the women's 800 out fast and it paid off as she won the second heat of preliminaries and her teammates
Yarithza Soto and
Bailie Jones raced their way into the final as well.
"All of our sprinters and hurdlers advanced to finals and we set ourselves up well to defend WAC Indoor titles tomorrow," Flood said. "We are not going to take anything for granted and we will scrap for every single point on the final day."
Field events will begin at 9 a.m. with the women's shot put; the running events will begin tomorrow at 1 p.m., all events are finals.
