The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team has added Meme Fletcher for the upcoming 2018 season, as announced by head coach
Tim Nollan.
Fletcher comes to the Lopes as a fifth-year senior, having recorded 778 career kills and 606 digs as a starter at Rutgers, playing against Big Ten competition.
"I'm really excited to have a player as quality as Meme," said Nollan. "She's played in the Big Ten for four years, she comes from a quality club program and she's played at a high level for a very long time. What really separates her in my mind, is what a great person and leader she is. She brings a ton of leadership and high level volleyball experience to our team that I think will help bring our young players along faster. Her understanding for what it takes to compete against the best teams in the country night in and night out, is going to be some great experience for our youth to soak up."
Fletcher's best season came as a sophomore during the 2015 campaign. She recorded 332 kills and 238 digs, ending the season ranked sixth in the Big Ten with 3.57 kills per set. She had a career-high nine double-doubles, four of which came against nationally ranked opponents.
"With Meme, we are bringing in someone who can score points for us and is also an elite level defender," said Nollan. "I believe we will have a very staunch defense, we are a great ball control team as it is, it is getting better next year and I think we will take a huge jump defending wise as we try to become the premier defending team in the league."
Fletcher is from Overland Park, Kansas and played at Blue Valley West High School where she compiled 1,088 kills for a team that reached the KS 6A Substate Championships in 2010 and 2011.Â
She also competed in six consecutive USA Volleyball National Championships and qualified in the open division during 14s, 15s, 16s and 17s with club team KC Power.
Fletcher comes from an athletic background as her father Jerold, played outside linebacker at Missouri from 1986-1991.
