Lopes scatter across country for summer ball

PHOENIX - Another season of GCU Baseball is in the books with the Lopes claiming their second Western Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship in three years. While the Lopes are done competing as a team for the year, the majority of the players scatter across the country for summer league baseball action. This gives student-athletes the chance to see a new part of the country, compete against new players, learn from different coaches and continue to develop their game.
"It's a great opportunity to see different parts of the country," head coach Andy Stankiewicz said. "It's a great time to meet new people, new teammates. They come back more mature and more experienced in the game. A lot of them come back better players."
For the summer of 2017, members of the Lopes will be off to some of the most prestigious leagues in the country including the Cape Cod League, the Northwoods League, the New England Collegiate League, the Alaska League and the West Coast League.
"They compete against some of the best, the guys from the bigger schools," Stankiewicz said. "They return and realize, 'Hey, I can compete against this guy.' It helps get our guys to believe that we can compete against anybody. That's part of why we send them out as well."
