DENVER - For the first time in his illustrious GCU career, outfielder
Garrison Schwartz was named Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week the conference announced on Monday morning. The junior had multiple hits in all three games in a sweep of UTRGV, hitting .615, and capped off the weekend with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th on Sunday.
"In the back of my mind, I was wanting to end it," Schwartz said of Sunday's 10th-inning at bat. "With a runner on second and no outs, you want to get something to the right side of the field so he can advance to third with one out. I was hoping that I could hit something hard and sneak it through, and that's what happened and we scored and got the win."
The walk-off wasn't the only damage Schwartz did throughout the weekend. His final three at bats consisted of a double, another double, followed by the walk-off hit. The Chandler, Ariz. native posted multiple hits in all three contests.
Schwartz was tabbed as the WAC's Preseason Player of the Year. While consistently driving in runs, Schwartz was struggling to hit up to his standard. He has turned it around as of late, hitting .346 in conference play with a .538 slugging percentage and is tied for second in the WAC with 18 RBIs. With five doubles in his last five games, Schwartz is tied for fourth in the conference with 13 doubles on the year.
"Early in the year, it was a little bit mechanically in my swing -- something was twisted," Schwartz said. "I worked hard with the coaches and went back to the basics of what has always worked for me. Even when I was fixing things, I wasn't putting the best numbers up, but I felt like I was doing my job and hitting the ball hard. Eventually, the game is going to reward you when you're working hard and putting good at bats together."
Schwartz marked the second GCU player to earn Hitter of the Week honors after
Austin Bull earned the honor in late March.
Jake Wong has been named Pitcher of the Week twice this year, bringing the Lopes' weekly honor total to four on the year.
Sacramento State's Parker Brahms was named Pitcher of the Week after tossing six three-hit, scoreless innings against Seattle U.
