CHICAGO - The Grand Canyon baseball team allowed a six-run third inning to Chicago State, falling in the opener of a three-game road series. The Cougars failed to score in any inning other than the third, but the early-game crooked number was all they would need to steal Game 1, 6-3.
It was an uncharacteristic outing for Lopes' ace
Jake Wong, who went just 3.0 innings and was handed his first loss since allowing a single run to Wichita State on Feb. 25.
Grand Canyon got on the board immediately thanks to the efforts of
Austin Bull. The leadoff man drew a walk before stealing second and third base.
Ian Evans, coming off of a three-hit game on Tuesday, picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to score Bull.
Trouble struck in the third inning when Chicago State loaded the bases with just one out. Left fielder Jacob Vanitvelt took full advantage, homering to give the Cougars a 4-1 lead. Chicago State struck for two more runs in the inning to lead 6-1. Wong did not return for the fourth inning.
The Cougars looked poised to strike again in the fourth inning, loading the bases with no outs. But reliever
Bobby Milacki was able to coax a strikeout and draw a double play ball to end the frame.
GCU finally broke up starting pitcher Brad Moore's no-hit bid in the top of the sixth, stringing together back-to-back-to-back singles to load up the bases with no outs. One run scored on an RBI ground ball from
Garrison Schwartz, while the Lopes employed a double steal to scratch across another run with Evans scoring from third. Grand Canyon cut Chicago State's deficit to a more manageable three runs at 6-3.
In the ninth, Grand Canyon loaded the bases with just one out. A sacrifice fly from Wyatt plated a run, but the Lopes stranded the tying run on base in the loss.
The Lopes will look to rebound on Friday when the two teams meet again at 1 p.m. MST.
