DENVER - Sophomore infielder
Austin Bull was named Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Over Grand Canyon's five games on the week, Bull went 8-for-15 (.533) with seven walks, accumulating an on-base percentage of .682. The switch-hitter also recorded two doubles and a triple, compiling an .800 slugging percentage on the week.
"Austin knows himself very well. He knows how to go very deep in counts," head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said following the weekend sweep of CSU Bakersfield. "He makes pitchers work a little bit because he's got such a great eye. He understands his swing and tries to hit those hard ground balls and line drives."
Bull opened WAC play by reaching base in his first seven plate appearances against the Roadrunners. In Friday's opener, he scored two of GCU's three runs and had two of the Lopes' four hits in a 3-2 victory. He had run-scoring hits in three of the five games. He had at least one hit and at least one walk in all five of the week's games.
The sophomore, named to the All-WAC team last year, leads the Lopes' in batting average and is top five in the conference.
Bull joins pitcher
Jake Wong as Grand Canyon's winners of the weekly WAC awards this season. Wong was named WAC Pitcher of the Week for his opening weekend effort against No. 22 Oklahoma State. Bull is the first GCU player to win WAC Hitter of the Week since
Zach Malis earned the award on April 25, 2016.
