Lopes start WAC play with perfect 7-0 win over Chicago State

LAS CRUCES, NM – The GCU women's tennis team began the WAC season in the best possible way on Saturday afternoon. The Lopes swept the Chicago State Cougars by a perfect score of 7-0. With the win, GCU's record improves to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in WAC play.
"The girls started off their conference matches strong today by shutting out Chicago State," GCU head coach Greg Prudhomme stated. "Chicago State came out playing some tough doubles on all three courts but the girls did a good job fending them off and winning the three courts to get our doubles point."
After sweeping doubles play, the Lopes continued the momentum in the singles competition. Four of the Lopes won in straight sets during the match, led by a 6-3, 6-4 sweep by Tatum Prudhomme at No. 1 and a 6-1, 6-3 victory by Susan Baklini at No. 3. Freshmen Celina Buhr and Emilia Occhipinti continued their strong seasons with wins at No. 4 and No. 6.
On Court 2, Alexandra Petrzalkova found herself in a battle. After falling behind in the first set, Petrzalkova fought back to win the tiebreaker and take the match by a score of 5-7, 7-6 (3), 12-10. Lana Rinaldi also had to bounce back from an early set loss on Court 4. She rallied to win the point by a score of 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.
"To get all seven points today was a good way to start," Prudhomme added. "The girls are resting up and looking forward to a tough match tomorrow but this should give us some good confidence and momentum moving into the next match."
GCU will continue conference play tomorrow morning against Seattle U at 9 a.m. Seattle is 7-8 on the season and has a 0-1 record in the WAC.
