The Grand Canyon University baseball program and head coach
Andy Stankiewicz announced a 2017 recruiting class that includes 12 newcomers to the Lopes. The full list of official signees includes nine from the state of Arizona to go along with individuals from Washington, Nebraska and Idaho.
"We are very excited to announce our 2017 recruiting class to Grand Canyon University baseball," Stankiewicz said. "First-year recruiting coordinator,
Gregg Wallis, and pitching coach,
Rich Dorman, hit the road hard this summer and fall and did a fantastic job of evaluating and building relationships with these student-athletes."
The 12 incoming Lopes include David Avitia (C), Cole Bellinger (INF/RHP), Nico Burgarello (SS), Brock Burton (INF/OF), Mitchell Hagan (1B/LHP), Nick Hull (RHP), Ben Kirke (RHP), Seth Nordlin (RHP), Nick Ohanian (RHP), Channy Ortiz (INF), Hayden Udall (RHP) and Drew Zmuda (RHP). The class includes four position players, six pitchers, and a pair of two-way players. Of the eight players who pitch, seven of them are right-handers, complementing the Lopes' current roster which features seven left-handed pitchers.
Of the incoming class, ten players are coming to Grand Canyon straight out of high school. Ohanian joins the Lopes from Mesa Community College and Nordlin comes from GateWay College.
The strong ties to local Arizona high schools continue for Stankiewicz's program. Bellinger and Ohanian join
Jake Wong as Hamilton High School products. Burgarello joins a growing list of Sandra Day O'Connor High School graduates on the Lopes including
Greg Saenz, Degan Harte, Tanner Baker and Ryan Alexander. Burton adds another Desert Vista High School alumnus to the team to go along with current outfielder
Garrison Schwartz. Nordlin joins Ian Evans as GateWay College transfers.
"We can say with the utmost confidence that these young men will represent GCU Baseball at the highest level, on and off the field," Stankiewicz said. "We believe each student-athlete will compete for playing time and push our program to be better. Again, special thanks to Coach Wallis and Coach Dorman for their dilligent work in recruiting and building our brand across the country."
The 12 members of the 2017 recruiting class will play their high school or community college seasons this spring before joining the Lopes in Fall 2017 and having the opportunity to officially take the field in February 2018.
Grand Canyon's upcoming 2017 season is set to begin on Feb. 17 as the Lopes welcome in Oklahoma State to Brazell Stadium for a three-game set.
