EVANSTON, ILL. – The Grand Canyon University men's and women's swimming and diving teams had an outstanding showing on the third and final day of the Northwestern TYR Invitational, with both teams finishing in third place overall.
The Lopes concluded the weekend by breaking four GCU team records and two Northwestern pool records and collecting an impressive total of fourteen individual NCAA "B" cut times.
"We had a good haul for a mid-season meet, but we still have a lot to improve on before we get to the WAC Championships," Head Coach
Steve Schaffer said.
Estela Davis Ortiz swam to first place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:55.97, her third individual NCAA "B" cut as well as the Lopes' second new pool record of the weekend.
Mark Nikolaev wrapped up the weekend by earning his fifth individual NCAA "B" cut time in the 200-yard backstroke (1:45.28).
"Our freshmen had some very good swims to complement the outstanding swims our top men and women had," Schaffer added. "It will be exciting to see how it all comes together by the end of the season."
Up next, qualifying swimmers will compete in USA Swimming's AT&T Winter Nationals beginning Wednesday, Nov. 30 - Saturday, Dec. 3.
