EVANSTON, ILL. – Grand Canyon University men's and women's swimming and diving teams both sit comfortably in third place after Day One of the Northwestern TYR Invitational.
GCU has collected 261 points on the women's side, not far behind Michigan State with 282 and Northwestern with 305.5. Meanwhile, the men's team racked up a total of 272.5 points compared to Northwestern with 296 points and Michigan State leading with 356.5.
Mark Nikolaev picked up two individual wins in the 50-yard backstroke (21.61) and 200-yard IM (1:47.38) as well as a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:19.24) along with
Bogdan Plavin,
Daniil Antipov and
Jacob Lambros. His 200-yard IM was also an NCAA "B" cut time.
Lambros and Plavin followed up their relay win earning the top two spots in the 50-yard freestyle event. Lambros' winning time of 19.79 and Plavin's time of 20.07 were both NCAA "B" cuts.
Estela Davis Ortiz shined in the 50-yard backstroke finals, coming in first with a time of 25.45. Rebecca Hakansson also earned some points for the Lopes with a second place finish in the 200-yard IM (2:01.97).
