PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon beach volleyball program and head coach
Kristen Rohr have announced the addition of Isabelle Bauman, Hannah Towne, Katie Sarber and Kiersten Varga to the 2017-18 recruiting class.
"In our second recruiting class we were looking to bring in a group of athletic players with a high volleyball IQ that could have an immediate impact on the program," Rohr said."This 2017 class will help bring the program to a new level and they will push everyone to be better and to work harder. I am confident our 2017 class will make a really big impact on GCU beach volleyball and the direction we are looking to take the program."
(Isabelle Bauman | Wheaton, Ill.)
Isabelle "Bella" Bauman (5'10) grew up in Wheaton, Ill. where she attended Glenbard South High School. Bauman played three years on the Raiders' varsity volleyball team, two years starting varsity and received Academic All-Conference honors for three consecutive years. During her senior year as captain, she led in number of kills and was named to the All-Conference team. In addition to her success on the courts, Bauman's dedication in the classroom landed her on the high school honor roll list for three and a half years.
Coach Rohr's thoughts:
"Bella is a talented, competitive and smart player with a high ceiling. She is really progressing as a blocker and shows a great amount of dedication on and off the court. She is an excellent student, is working hard in the weight room and in the sand. We feel she has the ability to be a big contributor to our program."
(Hannah Towne |Rochester Ind.)
Hannah Towne (5'10) played volleyball for four years at Rochester Community High School in her hometown of Rochester, Ind. In addition to receiving MVP and All-Conference honors four years in a row, Towne was recognized as a MaxPrep All-American Underclassman as a freshman, made the 3A First All-State Team as a sophomore and both the 2A All-State Team and Indiana North All-Star Team as a junior. She also remained heavily involved in school academics as the Class VP and member of the Athletic Student Council.
Coach Rohr's thoughts:
"Hannah had an impressive indoor career and is still really young in her beach game. She's a competitor, very coachable and knows how to win. We feel we picked her up at a very good time when we saw a lot of power, ball control and potential in her game. She is a hard worker and continues to elevate her play every time she steps in the sand and that is what will make her such an impact player for GCU."
(Katie Sarber | Dade City, Fla.)
Katie Sarber (5'9) will be coming to GCU from Dade City, Fla. where she played on the volleyball team at Pasco High School for three years. She made the varsity team as a freshman and spent three years starting, two years as captain and two years All-Conference. Sarber ignited her passion for beach volleyball and discovered her goal to play for a collegiate team while competing in a College Recruiting Showcase out in Huntington, Beach Calif. in the fall of 2015.
Coach Rohr's thoughts:
"Katie is an all-around player that is really aggressive, has high energy and is a communicative player with a big personality on the court. She brings a great deal of experience playing at a high level as a member of the A2 High Performance team. She is a great student, being ranked second in her class. We are excited for the type of game she will bring to our program."
(Kiersten Varga | Gijon, Spain)
Kiersten Varga (5'9) was born in Gijon, Spain but attended Providence Christian High School in Bradenton, Fla. A strong indoor and beach volleyball player, Varga decided to focus solely on her beach career during her sophomore year. She was one of 10 girls in the U.S selected to join the USAV A1 U19 National Team in 2015 and has been a member of the USAV Junior Beach High Performance Team for the past five years.
Coach Rohr's thoughts:
"Kiersten brings a ton of athleticism, speed, power and IQ to the table. She has been a member of the USA Beach National team for two years and has the ability to block or play defense and plays a big game at the net with her 10' touch. We fully expect her to be a big part of our success in the years to come."
