Behind strong pitching from their ace and an offense that connected for a season-high 15 hits, the Grand Canyon University baseball team improved to 2-3 on the season with an 8-1 win over visiting Hofstra University (0-1) tonight at Brazell Stadium. It was the home opener for the Antelopes, while the game marked the season-opener for the Pride after their opening weekend series was cancelled.
Starter
Jorge Perez tossed 9.0 innings, his seventh career complete game, allowing just one run on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts to even his record at 1-1. That run came in the first inning, a frame in which Hofstra collected two of their six total hits.
"That was vintage Jorge," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "He was attacking with his sinker and fastball, and his changeup and slider were also working. A complete game on your second time out is not easy to do. I'm glad he got the complete game, for a starting pitcher that is a huge deal. We are proud that he finished what he started."
Chad De La Guerra reached base in each of his five plate appearances, collecting four hits and a walk as he bumped his season average to .421 (8-for-19).
David Walker added three hits as GCU's number one and two hitters accounted for nearly half of their hits tonight. Walker also collected three RBI, while De La Guerra added two.
"Chad can hit, we knew that coming out of junior college in California," Stankiewicz said. "He has a nice bat, and is very balanced. He is a great young man and is swinging the bat very well."
GCU's offensive outburst forced the Pride to use five total pitchers in the game.
The 'Lopes had nearly matched their season-high for hits with 10 through 4.0 innings, building a 5-1 advantage in that time. GCU cushioned that lead in the sixth, scoring three more runs to give Perez a comfortable lead.
"We played good defense today," added Stankiewicz. "If we can do that consistently, we can be in almost every game. We put the ball in play and put pressure on them. We got some speed, so we need to keep the ball out of the air. If we do that, I think we will have more success."
After Hofstra pushed across a run in the first inning, the 'Lopes responded with three hits to even the score. GCU opened the bottom of the second with back-to-back hits, including an RBI double off the bat of
Garrett Jeffries, to break that tie. Jeffries came around to score on an RBI single from Walker two batters later to make it 3-1.
The teams traded zeroes in the third, and GCU tacked on two more runs in the fourth after
Chris Lindmark drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a balk, and came around to score on Walker's second RBI of the game. Walker crossed home plate on a single off the bat of De La Guerra before a fly out to left field ended the frame.
The three-run sixth started with a
Brandon Smith single and he came around to score via Walker's third hit of the contest. De La Guerra's triple to right-center field plated Walker, and one batter later, he scored on a groundout to second base.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Fans can follow the action live by visiting
