The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team today announced the addition of Joshua Lowery to the 2012-13 squad. Lowery previously played at Division I Pepperdine.
“We are very excited to have Josh join our GCU family,” said head coach Russ Pennell. “His experience alone will have a big impact on our team. He has started in over 50 Division I games and bringing in that knowledge to our team will be beneficial, especially after losing Kyle Speed to graduation. Josh is a competitor and an unbelievable team guy. Our campus will love him because of his play and dynamic personality.”
Lowery, who will be a senior in 2012-13, saw action in 90 games (52 starts) over three seasons at Pepperdine. The 6-3 point guard averaged 31.8 minutes per game as a junior, sixth-best in the West Coast Conference. Lowery averaged 8.7 points per game and was tied for 10th in the WCC with 3.0 assists per game. He shot .767 (79-for-103) from the line, tied for ninth-best in the league.
“I think this is going to be a great opportunity for me to play with my younger brother and for coaches who are inspiring their players to be better on and off the court,” said Lowery. “It is a blessing and I feel fortunate to be a part of this program. GCU is moving in the right direction and I hope to help them take the next step.”
Lowery graduated from Desert Vista High School in Phoenix, Ariz. He helped lead Desert Vista to the 2008 5A Division I state championship as a junior. Lowery was named an all-state 5A first-team selection after averaging 12.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. He also spent time with the Arizona Premier Academy in 2007 and 2008.
Lowery joins his brother, Jeff, who signed with GCU from Desert Vista in the fall.
Grand Canyon is coming off a 19-8 season in which they went to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in five years. GCU fell to eventual national champion, Western Washington, in the opening round of the West Regional. The Antelopes won their final nine regular season games, including a buzzer-beating win over Dixie State in the season finale at Grand Canyon University Arena.
